It is usual for addictions to present with mental health conditions and recovery involves addressing the emotional issues underlying and consequent to the substance problem. These presentations are often referred to as ‘Dual Diagnosis”. In my experience it is the norm for addictions to involve mind, body and spirit and important to consider all of these in recovery.

As a general psychiatrist having worked for over ten years in the addiction field I have great experience at assessing, monitoring and treating disorders that are common in is area, including:

Mood disorders, anxiety and depression

Conditions relating to traumatic events ( like post-traumatic stress disorder, emotionally unstable personality disorder)

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder

Equally, physical health disorders are commonplace and I also have extensive experience of assessing and tracking these. I regularly work jointly with my general medical colleagues (frequently gastroenterology, cardiology, neurology) to ensure that recovery is a whole body process.
